台灣的菜市場與眾不同，生鮮蔬果、新鮮漁獲等每天準時出現在菜市場，食材的新鮮不在話下，更少不了市場間的人情味；就連台灣作家劉克襄也撰文大讚菜市場的多樣化，更多了不少慕名前往的旅客，成為另類觀光景點。
菜市場也可以是篇雋永的散文。臺灣生態人文作家劉克襄所撰《木柵菜市場》一文，描述木柵市場匯聚多元族群與多樣化在地食材之風貌，譽為臺北版的清明上河圖；這也讓木柵市場人氣竄升，除了來採買的老顧客外，更多了不少慕名前往的旅客。臺北市市場處表示，傳統市場裡多樣化的在地食材與濃厚的人情味是量販店、超級市場等零售通路無法取代的。
以木柵市場為例，其生鮮食材來源除了周遭貓空、草湳等山區的農作外，石碇、深坑、平溪的農畜產品，甚至宜蘭地區的三星蔥、員山溫泉絲瓜、高麗菜等皆從產地直銷而來，不但文山區的居民愛來木柵市場採買，就連石碇、深坑地區的居民也寧可捨近求遠前來光顧。
同時，年前來木柵市場辦年貨，不但有最新鮮實惠的食材可採買，還有不少年菜美食、伴手禮可選購，如寶珠古早味循古法，純手工製作的年糕、發糕、蘿蔔糕，讓人吃到懷念的滋味。孫豪記水餃堅持手工製作不用機器餃皮，每天4點即起床桿麵皮，做餡料，因此水餃吃起來餡料飽滿，餃子皮香Q紮實。銘記肉鬆其家族本身即在經營豬肉攤，注重豬肉品質，肉鬆絕對要求每天現炒現做，讓顧客享用最具口感的風味。冠盈茗茶專賣有機茶葉與產自臺灣各地的高山茶，還有自己的茶園，每年冬、春兩季採收的茶葉香名遠播，送禮自用兩相宜。
